KIRIGA ESTATE

  • Flavour profile: Red grape, blackberry, redcurrant
  • Process: Washed
  • Varietal: Peaberry
  • Roast: Medium

You may remember we had coffees from the Kiriga Estate earlier this year and so might be surprised to see them back! For the first time ever, we've bought both the early ('fly') and main ('late') crop harvests from Kiriga and are so happy to be able to offer you more bright Kenyan coffees as the days start to get darker. Traditionally it has been thought that the fly crop isn't up to the same quality standards as the main crop, but that's definitely not what we're tasting from Kiriga - it's all delicious and interestingly different.

The earlier 'fly' crop was harvested around September 2021 and this newer 'main' crop was harvested in January 2022. Traditionally, coffee producers often see much smaller fly crops and the majority of their production happens during the main crop (makes sense!) but across these two harvests Brian at Kiriga actually had a larger fly crop, so these coffees won't be around for quite as long as they were before.

Coffee producing countries that are on the equator (notably Kenya and Colombia) have two harvests due to their position on the planet, Kenya has 'fly' and 'main', Colombia has 'mitaca' and 'main', basically the same thing but with slightly different names. Their seasons are much less distinct than we experience up here in the UK and instead of four, they only have two - dry and wet. While our temperatures can fluctuate quite a bit from hot to cold and everywhere in-between, coffee producing countries like Kenya and Colombia are often between 20 and 30 degrees all year round - that's how you keep a coffee plant really happy! (major kudos to any of you who are keeping little coffee trees alive in your homes)

First off there's a wave of red grape, which is followed by blackberry. A redcurrant note comes through on the finish whilst the whole lot is wrapped up in a creamy body.
