Enrique Vasquez Zamora owns 4 hectares of land in the El Huaco village in Huabal district. Huabal is made up of various villages which span a series of mountains meaning that altitude and soil can vary greatly within a relatively small area of land. This creates an exciting diversity where some coffees grow in African-like soils and others in much drier and hot conditions.
With greater demand than ever for specialty coffee in Peru farmers like Enrique are increasingly planting varietals such as Bourbon, Castillo and the Caturra that we have available here. Although Peru continues to rise in popularity as a source of excellent quality the majority of farmers lack the infrastructure and access to knowledge to capitalise on their diverse and idyllic growing conditions thus making Enrique's crop all the more unique.
Coffee processing involves a 36hr fermentation before being moved to raised beds for around 15 days to reach the desired moisture level.
