Specialty coffee from China is a new phenomenon. Less than 10 years ago, you would have been hard pressed to find it anywhere in the UK – or anywhere at all, for that matter. It’s only through an unprecedented level of investment and energy, by people inside and outside of China, that Chinese specialty coffee has gotten to where it is today.
One of these groups is Yunnan Coffee Traders. They took over operating the Banka mill in 2018 and have focused on developing the techniques to make their coffee as vibrant and interesting as coffee anywhere else. After changing everything from pruning, to fertilisation, to how the coffee is picked and processed, they have created a satisfyingly complex and fruity lot.
Our friends Shirani and Christian started IndoChina coffee in 2013 to bring coffees like Banka to the UK. After working in journalism, NGOs and in government, the two discovered that there were remarkable coffees across China and South East Asia and decided that they wanted to share them. The presence of coffee in Britain is largely off the back of their dedication to the producers making these fantastic coffees. Their work there has allowed producers to invest in their farms and created new connections between roasters and producers, who would have never known each other without them.
