A few hours north of Nairobi, near the protected forest of Gatamaiyo, thirty family farms grew this coffee. Like so many of the producers in Kenya, these farmers grow a collection of cultivars that have come to this beloved coffee origin from all over the world.

SL28 is the most beloved of all these cultivars. Giving Kenyan coffee its signature wine-y flavour, it’s a fragile cultivar that is often grown beside more hearty types of coffee. By mixing the cultivars, producers can create more genetic diversity on their farms, which limits the severity of the many diseases that prey on coffee.

Surprisingly, the story of Kenyan coffee does not go back that long. Even though it sits beside the birthplace of coffee, Ethiopia, Kenyan cultivation of coffee only started in 1893 when some priests introduced the Bourbon cultivar from Reunion Island to their mission near Nairobi. Coffee-growing was slow to be taken up and only really hit its peak in the ‘70s and ‘80s, when coffee was not only at its peak in terms of how much was grown but also as a political and cultural force in the country.
