Gara Agena is a washing station owned by our Ethiopian sourcing partners, Testi Coffee. By establishing washing stations in areas with favourable growing conditions and paying premiums for well-harvested cherries, Testi ensures that they receive extremely high quality fruit, resulting in coffees with outstanding sweetness, complexity and distinction.
Six hundred farmers deliver their coffee cherries to the washing station to be processed. The coffee is hand- sorted by the washing station team before being dried in the fruit on raised beds.
"Gara Agena is located on a meander of the Geta River, so the drying beds are almost completely encircled by the river," saysMarket Lane co-owner Jason, who visited the washing station earlier this year. "This creates a cool microclimate, which slows down the drying process. This naturally processed lot istasting spectacular; it's sweet, vibrant and lively."
