This coffee was produced by Nery Pablo López, a proud Jakalteko Mayan man and second-generation coffee producer who farms in Guatemala’s Concepción Huista municipality. Nery inherited his land when he was 20, and he and his family now grow coffee, maize and beans there, all of which they sell through the El Sendero Cooperative.
Founded in 2018, El Sendero is a dynamic cooperative with deep connections to the Concepción Huista community. Not only does the co-op help connect farmers with quality-focused buyers, but it also offers its members financial services, agricultural training and social events that help build a sense of community among the area’s farmers.
All of El Sendero’s work has helped significantly improve its producer-members’ livelihoods and helped build their trust in the co-op. When we visited Nery earlier this year, he told us, “We care about coffee because we get to meet you, the people who drink our coffee. Because of this visit, I know things are being done right by the cooperative.”
Nery’s decades of accrued knowledge and experience are evident in the flavour profile of this delicious coffee. Guacamaya is bright and lively with a lovely jammy sweetness in the cup.
