Origin Coffee - Mugaga Kaguimoini Kenya Washed
Tasting Notes: Redcurrant, Blackberry, White Wine.
A complex and exceptionally high-quality example from Kenya, by The Mugaga Farmers' Cooperative.
Story
Mugaga FCS, a cooperative nestled in the heart of Nyeri County, comprises five factories: Kagumoini, Kiamabara, Kieni, Gathuga, and Gatina. Farmers meticulously handpick ripe cherries, which are then delivered to the factories. After pulping, the parchment is fermented for 12-24 hours without water. Following fermentation, the parchment is washed and graded into P1, P2, P3, and P lights. P1 and P2 grades are soaked overnight before being placed on drying beds for 10-15 days.
The cooperative regularly conducts farmer training sessions at its factories. To minimise water usage, the factory reuses the water used for pulping cherries, sourcing additional water from a nearby stream.
The calibre of this coffee stands out in a year marked by lower overall Kenyan coffee quality. The government's revocation of commercial milling licenses has led to congestion at government-run mills, impacting the processing.
